Hi all, Diletta De Cristofaro here, I'm a Teaching Fellow in Contemporary Literature at the University of Birmingham and I'll be chairing this conversation. I wanted to welcome you all and thank our speakers for their contributions, which I'm really looking forward to hearing! Don, I love that idea of the phone going dead being taken in a literal way. It is a death in a way, a conversation and a link dying. Maybe even a bond due to what was said in the conversation. It makes you realise how loaded everyday speech can be.

Amy, Don, Rose– thank you so much for the thoughtful feedback. Yes! There are so, so many other songs I would have liked to discuss and loved all the examples you brought up. Alasdair: thank you for this fascinating talk. Could you tell us a little more about the symbolism of this event? On one hand, Byers sets up a cosmic circle, with all the interlocutors swathed in an endless pink robe. That suggests, to me, a circle of initiates, with the studio and TV audience as validating observers (outside the circle)? But the callers phoning in, and the speaker-phone, seems to relocate the cosmic circle out in telephonic cyberspace - that the oracular status belongs to the disembodied voices. Have I misunderstood how this worked? I would have thought the people on the stag...
